Twenty First/Twenty First Gallery is pleased to present Habitat (Some Pleasures
and Discomforts of Domestic Life), a group exhibition gathering works by Davide
Balula, Marcelline Delbecq, Jeanne Detallante, Ellie Ga, Ines Lechleitner, Justin
Matherly, Christine Rebet, Slavs and Tatars, and Amy Yao.

Following a collaboration with Cumulus Studio in 2009, presenting a selection of
outdoor functional objects designed by artists Liam Gillick, John Bock and Aaron
Young, among others, the design and limited edition furniture gallery pursues its
interest in contemporary art and invites Béatrice Gross, independent curator, to
organize its next exhibition.

Concerned topically with the representation of domesticity, Habitat reflects on
the decorative mission of a design gallery, while examining, en abîme, the
intimate commodification and institutionalization of private interiors. With the
ambivalence of a family reunion, the exhibition conjures up various orders and
disorders of the domestic apparatus: from daily rituals of bliss and labor to
religious narcissism; from visionary corners to staged domestication; from
diminished bodies to literary heroes; from polar confinements to the Gates of
Hell…

A Temporary Library complements Habitat’s visual investigation: each artist lends
three items from her/his personal library, to constitute a transitory corpus of
printed matters dedicated to domesticity.

Artist Brief – Capricious #11 – The Fashion Issue

As we approach the production of our 11th issue of Capricious, it seems like an appropriate time for a little retrospective viewing on our behalf. As far as we are concerned, we have always been far from addressing “fashion” as most of us know it. Fashion photography has received a lot of space within mainstream printed media and even though we love fashion, we have always made a clear point of not being a fashion magazine.

Fashion photography is dictated within certain parameters wherein the Capricious mindset cannot have its freedom to flourish. We aim to showcase emerging artists whose work falls within the space between fashion photography and fine art photography. However, when we take a step outside of what we typically understand to be the definition of “fashion,” we may reframe it as a whimsical phenomenon that touches and seduces our hearts by creating the illusion of an alternate world. In that sense, “fashion” actually comes very close to the thoughts and visions we represent in the pages of Capricious.

Here, we are interested in fashion as the illusion or dream, which touches our hearts, as the representation of the body and all it’s forms and interpretations, and as the composition of the elements that create that image.

Capricious #11: “The Fashion Issue” will present work of selected photographers who address fashion not as we know it to be represented within the strict rules of editorial fashion photography, but as the larger phenomena of fashion.

**PLEASE NOTE: Credits for clothing design, models, stylists etc. will NOT be included – in keeping with the notion that the selected work is not for fashion advertisement.

We want you to submit 6-12 photographs (more will not be viewed). We accept all formats and all colors. Email your submission (images should be approximately 8x10 inches @ 72 dpi) to: submit@capriciousmagazine.com
Not all submissions will be guaranteed a spot in the coming issue yet capricious will consider your submission for future issues. The exhibition will consist of site-specific sculptural installations, photos, collage and screen printing. She will also be launching her new book, co-published by Capricious, also titled Muddy.
“Gravity grows and my overweight forces me to descend into the ground - behind the skin, beyond daylight. I have signed up for the course 'Cave Diving Inside the Brain'. When I sink up to my knees into the brown substance, I find myself face to face with a troll. She introduces herself as Muddy and tells me about the ultimate wish for weightlessness. About Emmeline de Mooij
Born in Delft, The Netherlands, in 1978, she now lives and works in both New York and Amsterdam. de Mooij's work consists of installations, photographs and performances. She has had solo shows in Villa Nouailles (Hyeres, France), Steinsland/Berliner (Stockholm), Salone del Mobile (Milan), Tsumori Chisato (Paris), and Motive (Amsterdam). Group shows have included: the Stedelijk Museum (Amsterdam), Robert Berman (Los Angeles), Art Cologne (Germany), YK3 (Melbourne). Honors de Mooij has been awarded: Scholarship Award Photo Global Program School of Visual Arts New York, shortlist Hyeres photography Competition (France), Kunsthuis SYB residency (The Netherlands), First Prize Selfware Competition (Austria). Her work has been published in the New York Times, Museum Paper, Purple Magazine, Dazed&Confused, GLU magazine, Dagens Nyheter, YKKY, Volkskrant. In 2009 she published the book Bush Compulsion in collaboration with artist Melanie Bonajo.

The Bruce High Quality Foundation University is pleased to announce Slavs and Tatars’ 79.89.09 lecture at the School of Visual Arts in New York on Friday February 26th at 7pm as an offsite event in the BHQFU’s Edifying performance series. An intimate visual, oral, and written study of two key years (1979 and 1989), 79.89.09 looks at the Iranian Revolution, monobrows, modernity, the fall of communism, the Beach Boys, and mysticism to better understand the world in which we live.

A collaboration with Berlin-based culture bi-annual 032c, 79.89.09 was first presented at Moscow’s Triumph Gallery during the Cycles and Seasons festival in April 2009 before making its way to the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw and the opening lecture of the 2009-2010 Studium Generale at Amsterdam’s Rietveld Academy.

Printed Matter is pleased to announce a double-book presentation for Kidnapping Mountains and Love Me, Love Me Not: Changed Names, two titles by the collective Slavs and Tatars.
Recently published by Onestar Press as part of their ongoing artists’ book series, Love Me, Love Me Not: Changed Names uses textual diagrams to investigate the nominal tug-of-wars enacted over cities throughout the Eurasian region. As different political entities exercised control over the cities, naming enacts dominion in a way that the artists describe as "entire metropolises caught like children in the spiteful back and forth of a custody battle." Love Me, Love Me Not is part of a group show The Past is a Foreign Country at the Centre of Contemporary Art ’Znaki Czasu’ in Torun, Poland.

Published by Book Works, Kidnapping Mountains is a playful exploration of the muscular stories, wills, and defeat inhabiting the Caucasus region. Comprising two parts: an eponymous section addressing the complexity of languages and identities on the fault line of Eurasia, and Steppe by Steppe Romantics, a restoration of the region’s seemingly reactionary approaches to romance.

"In the summer of 2008, Rhys Chatham visited Bern, Switzerland for a Guitar Trio performance together with local musicians that the club had recruited for him. They rehearsed during the day and played a fabulous show that night. Rhys was blown away by the skills of the drummer and bass player and talked about plans to form a trio - half a year later he was back in Bern and introduced Julian Sartorius (drums) and Mago Flueck (bass) to new compositions he brought along. Beat Unternährer on trombone joined as guest musician.

Reto Mäder (RM74, Sum Of R, Ural Umbo) recorded many hours of these sessions on a multi-track machine. Over the next few months, Mäder listened to the recordings, separated the wheat from the chaff, selected the best parts and made pre-mixes. He even mixed different parts of the takes together and sent them to Rhys, who noted what he wanted to have changed or replaced. After more than 100 hours of work, a brand new Rhys Chatham album was finally mixed and mastered.

Some tracks are only slightly modified from the original recordings, with just a few effects added or small sections from other parts of the recording sessions mixed in. Other sections emerged purely in the mixing studio and were created from different parts of the sessions. And some sections were complemented by extra instrumental tracks played by Mäder himself.

The result is an album of new Rhys Chatham tracks with this band - something you haven't heard since the Die Donnergötter recordings of the 80s..."

How to begin? The rhetoric of violence in visual arts between genre movies and performance art? Mass media as an anti-model in avant-garde, or the place of women in conceptual art? Paradoxes in criticality and high production value moviemaking? Maybe auteurism, authority and collaborative creativity?

Let’s keep it simple: in the 1970s in New York, Kathryn Bigelow was part of the art world. She collaborated with Lawrence Weiner, Art & Language, Vito Acconci, Richard Serra, and others. This was long before she directed the “action-packed” Hollywood movies Blue Steel, Point Break or Strange Days and established herself as one of the very few female film directors with a penchant for genre movies and gender roleplays – something which made her appreciated as much as an auteur than as a case study in film criticism and women studies.

Some might say her conceptualist past isn’t more than just a mere footnote in her biography, a funny anecdote to remember to tell at a social dinner. Others would reply that you can’t happen to sing Art & Language lyrics just by chance. But how formative exactly were these formative years? And also: how can one determine whether one’s early years are just a hitch or the origins of everything that followed? Is this a question of contradiction and self-denial or continuity and achievement?

Breaking Point traces Kathryn Bigelow’s trajectory in art in the 1970s and subsequent progression into the contemporary popular cinematic landscape starting in the mid 1980s. The exhibition starts with Lawrence Weiner’s video of a young Bigelow reading aloud in a mise-en-scène similar to a romantic post-Nouvelle Vague sequence. We then follow her path from contributions to The Fox journal and the early issues of Semiotext(e) to Cinématographe and L’Ecran Fantastique, from collaborating with The Red Krayola and New Order, from quoting Jurgen Habermas and Mao Tse-Tung to casting Jamie Lee Curtis and Angela Bassett, from participating in the 1976 Venice Biennale to the 2010 Academy Awards, where her 2009 film The Hurt Locker is an award frontrunner.

In the lineage of John Cage's Lecture on Nothing (1950), or Robert Morris’s 1964 performance 21.3 where the artist lip-synched a film of art historian Erwin Panofsky reading his Studies On Iconology (1939), Edifying, a series of performance-lectures curated by Beatrice Gross, presents a selection of contemporary performative events concerned with the dramatization of knowledge and its dissemination.

Christine Rebet's Poison Lecture, originally commissioned by Future Art Research (F.A.R.) at Arizona State University, re-stages the first formal lecture ever dedicated to the art of magic, delivered in Boston in 1927 by renowned conjuror John Mulholland.

The re-created text, derived from Mulholland's numerous, now-declassified reports and manuals (Quicker than the Eyes, The Art of Illusion or Magic in the Making), carries hidden references to his later career during the Cold War, teaching secrets of the trade to Central Intelligence Agency (C.I.A.) operative agents. Lending his unusual abilities to the service of his country's safety and leadership, Mulholland revealed himself a valuable master of patriotic trickery and deception to American spies in the 1950s.

While Mulholland (Zach Rockhill) delivers an authoritative expose about the history and mechanisms of magic, his assistant, a young professional magician (Josh Rand), demonstrates, with the help of makeshift props, tricks inspired by legendary conjurors such as Robert Houdin, Dai Vernon or Harry Lorayne,complementing live the slide-projection of found images culled from textbooks, catalogues and newspapers. Unraveling a dazzling polyphony of text, still and moving illustrations, Rebet's performative piece combines the secretive worlds of magic and espionnage, entertainment and geopolitics, mass captivation and government, to wittily expose their kindred spirit.

With a background in painting and scenography, Christine Rebet has mainly developed in the past ten years animated films and performances. Her work has been shown internationally, among others locations, at Le Magasin, Grenoble; Musée d’Art contemporain, Lyon (France); Ittinger Kunst Museum, Switzerland; Parasol-unit, London; Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art, Arizona; Taka Ishii Gallery, Tokyo; Moore Space, Miami; Guild and Greyskhul Gallery, and The Kings County Biennial/James Fuentes & Kidd Yellin, New York. Rebet's work will be included in the next SITE/Santa Fe Biennial.

After two stages, one in Luxembourg to celebrate the European Capital of Culture in 2007, the other at the Mudac, Musée du Design et des Arts Appliqués Contemporains de Lausanne in 2008, the international exhibition DYSFASHIONAL renews itself and settles between Paris and Berlin.

The exhibition, which will be presented at the Passage du Désir in 2009 and at the Haus der Kulturen der Welt in Berlin in 2010, will showcase a selection of pieces from the previous editions as well as a series of high-brow new productions by designers and artists from both Paris and Berlin.

The project will be completed by PARASITE, a hybrid space somewhere between shop and gallery, devoted to emerging artists and designers who explore the boundaries of contemporary fashion, and P.S, a show which invites choreographers to transfigure the posture imposed by clothes: the performance becomes a means to reveal how clothing shapes the body, determines our gestures and defines our identity.

DYSFASHIONAL considers fashion in the widest sense of the word. Rather than exhibiting clothes and styles, DYSFASHIONAL explores the broad range of materials that turn fashion into a way of representing personal identity and experience. Staged as a construction site, DYSFASHIONAL does not define fashion but tackles the seemingly frivolous yet vital realm of fashion by examining the approach of designers and artists from various backgrounds and invites us on a spectacular and striking journey, bringing us closer to a world in which the protagonists are not the objects but the creative process itself.

In the title Dys-fashional, the prefix "dys" indicates a disturbance, a discord within the system. The idea at the outset was to verify the dysfunctional dimension of fashion, that is to say, the elements that resist and clash with a "literal" definition of this world, as a simple collection of garments and accessories, as a production system for commercial objects, images and products to do with identity.

The idea is therefore to inverse the principles and to invite fashion designers to present instillations which reflect their imagination and creative universe, rather than their collections.

Through these environments, objects and films, a mutli-layered horizon constructs itself, where fashion appears beyond the objects which materialise it, as a field for experimentation or a state of sensibility in the making.

DYSFASHIONAL is not only a barometer for high-brow experimentation between art and fashion, but is also a bridge between Paris and Berlin, two fashion and art capitals.

Révolté par la bureaucratisation du régime, il anime ensuite l’opposition de gauche antistalinienne. Incarcéré et exclu du Parti communiste, il finira sa vie en exil au Mexique.

During a space of three years, Taiyo Onorato and Nico Krebs traveled several months through the United States, working 'on the road' on the photo series The Great Unreal. The photographic work deals with reality and the fabrication of reality. The geography of America serves as both setting and fertile ground for the examination.

Mysticism and demystification are important aspects in this process, as is working with a rich inventory of visual icons that can be continually deconstructed and manipulated. The working method of both photographers is based on interventions prescribed mostly by happenstance and change. Through repetition and associative placement, the sometimes crude, sometimes subtle interventions begin to link to one another, establishing an exciting transformation of reality that only hesitatingly reveals itself to the viewer.

Together with book designers Megi Zumstein and Claudio Barandun, what emerged is an unmitigated picture book that makes a visual journey possible without any instructions. It comprises narrative image sequences that approximate the curiosity and restlessness of being on the move and, at the same time, depict associative connections with the American landscape.

EVERYTHING STARTS AS SOMETHING YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND
"All my paintings and neon come from a process of creating a new image every day. For seven years I did a painting every weekday, now I do daily drawings. This is partially out of respect for all of the people I know who work regular jobs, because I don't consider myself different from them. It's also partially out of an enjoyment of the freedom I have in my practice and a desire to push myself and see what I can come up with next. Finally, it's because I have an interest in maintaining a record of my intellectual development, for myself, and for anthropological purposes.

As part of my commitment to all of these things, it's my opinion that honesty plays an important role in choosing the images I make. What I take to be "honest" is a matter of paying attention to things that I'm genuinely interested in. To me this means listening to my biological and intellectual needs without worrying about looking socially unacceptable, smart, out of touch or pandering to my conscience. From any given series of ideas to draw or paint, I'll choose those that have a certain "electricity" to them, that hold my attention and get me excited or engaged.

In order to maintain vitality my process has to remain flexible. I can't hold myself to any one line of thought, a style, or subject matter. At the same time, I'm a slow learner, and there are certain things that seem to be limitless in their value to me, such as: wilderness landscapes, sex and violence. These particular subjects are due to things I imprinted on in my rural childhood, things I have attraction to as a male human and things related to social and cultural anxieties.

At this point in the evolution of this daily process (I'm about at the twelve year mark) most of the images that hold my attention come from a place that is best described as "peripheral". These are things that my deliberate mind is a little too dumb to run into on its linear path, but it can sometimes help out. Often, it's hard to recreate these images because it's like they're in the corner of my eye, and if I look directly at them, they change shape. Sometimes, I watch them roll through my head right before I go to sleep.

Almost all of my images are entirely invented. I only use photographs or other source materials as reference (in most cases), the way a writer would use a dictionary. It's my belief that invented images contain more nuanced information related to development. In addition, there's a pure rush of excitement that comes from making an image that didn't exist in the world before.

Over time, these peripheral images have gotten more complicated. Things like atmosphere, depth, dimension and details in character of people and places have gotten more specific and increased in their range of complexity (some of them are still pretty simple). The result is that I've broadened the spectrum of art that I look at to inform my painting. My painting process owes much to early American artists like Thomas Moran, Frederic Edwin Church and Albert Bierstadt, as well as other "traditional" painters like Frederic Remington, Caspar David Friedrich, Edward Hopper and Andrew Wyeth. I feel a huge respect for their facility with paint, and I respond to their ability to create an environment and convey character.

Of course, the meat of my work is actually very little about standing on these men's shoulders, or even about relating to the art world at all. Far more important to maintaining vitality and "usefulness" to myself, and anyone else who may be interested in the development of someone from this time and place is the part of my process that I call "Field Research". By this I mean just going out and participating in the world the way a guy my age, of my upbringing, who lives where I do, would. This part of my job is pretty hard to do wrong. I just get to do the things that I want to do: hiking, surfing, taking road trips, spending time with friends, etc. The things that set my work apart from someone such as Thomas Moran, other than my interests (some might say quality), are in many cases simply products of my time: I can travel places in shorter time than he could, I have access to technology that allows me to see the world in different ways, maintain dialogs with many people easily and offer insights into things that might never have occurred to me otherwise, I also have an awareness of the changing of the world socially and environmentally – all of this contributes to the sensibility of my work. I understand that the information in my work will be received in varying degrees by different viewers, but I hope that some usefulness can be obtained by anyone."

Seasick Mama, a Brooklyn-based canvas to clothing apparel company, will be presenting an exhibit called, Don’t Become The Things You Hate. In today’s contemporary recession, an industry that is struggling to survive is the print and magazine world. To reach out, Seasick Mama has asked almost a dozen magazines, bloggers, and other local favorites to express “how they survive” during this difficult time..but in only six words.

"I Can't Pay My Phone Bill" was created as an example of the everyday objects and luxuries we take for granted... until they're taken away from us. Of course, when one can't pay his/her phone bill, their link to the outside world is cut off, creating a void between their loved ones. Could that mean the economy is killing our relationships? Perhaps. I hope we never find out." -Erin Loechner of Design for Mankind.

These poetic proclamations (some comical, some foul) will be beautifully printed on large-scale canvases, but also onto a limited edition series to t-shirts, just in time for fashion week! Proceeds from the public’s support will benefit the pockets of the writers.

The presentation of the exhibit is extremely special, because Seasick Mama has teamed up with The Stand Alone Gallery and The Artists & Fleas Designers Market.

The Stand Alone Gallery is owned and directed by mastermind Daniel Quinn, who has given life to this mobile space. The Stand Alone Gallery can take any shape or form to create a space for any creative endeavor, some of which include: a roof top exhibit with the Gawker Artists and a solo show for Erik Braun in the Chelsea area.

The Artists & Fleas Market is a melting pot of artists, designers, vintage collectors, and handmade crafters. It’s a home to a community of artists, one of which is Seasick Mama. They will be hosting the exhibit and we could not be happier.

The exhibit is bringing the community together to celebrate the creativity that springs when people work together—but also the release of Seasick Mama new tee collection.

Les films d’action blacks du début des années 70 ont offert à Hollywood son premier cinéma noir: acteurs, réalisateurs, caméramans, scénaristes, éditeurs. Intimement lié aux préoccupations identitaires et aux revendications politiques de la communauté noire, en pleine lutte pour les droits civiques, ce nouveau cinéma répond à l’attente des noirs américains de disposer de leurs propres héros, de pouvoir être fiers de ce qu’ils sont.

Des bandes originales de ces films, de qualité exceptionnelle, on retrouve parmi le meilleur de la funk et de la black music. Emmanuelle de Héricourt est, au début des années 2000, la femme de l’ombre de l’electronica française. Elle ne fait que de rares mais sublimes apparitions sur les albums de Hypo, de Anne Laplantine et sur les compilations du label Active Suspension. Mais si ses apparitions se font rares, c’est qu’EDH n’est pas physiquement présente à Paris au moment où un mini buzz pousse ses pairs sous les projecteurs de la « French Touch off ».

En effet, en 2001, EDH est en pleine déprime à New York.
Désœuvrée et désargentée, elle erre dans un appartement vide de Manhattan et n’a pour activité officielle qu’un emploi précaire de VJ à la Knitting Factory.
Le reste du temps, elle le passe en autiste, avec pour seuls compagnons, un chat du Bronx et un synthétiseur rafistolé. En secret, elle se livre corps et âme à une musique de cave qui n’aurait a priori jamais pu sortir de son vieux PC.
Et c’est ce qui se serait passé si le rappeur américain Subtitle, qui dirige le label Matte Black Editions à Los Angeles, n'eusse mis la main sur les dossiers secrets d'Emmanuelle, pour nous livrer un album dont la beauté n’a d’égal que la tristesse.

« New York Tracks » est une route solitaire semée d’embûches. Une progression lente et prudente, à la lampe torche, vers des retranchements qui frôlent souvent la folie. Un chemin de croix qui traverse des contrées cendrées, où seule l’abstraction fait figure d’oasis. On croise tour à tour le fantôme de Nico, la poisse du « Geek The Girl » de Lisa Germano, la noirceur du « Pornography » de Cure et la vraie/fausse naïveté des Residents.
A mi parcours l’album s’ouvre pleinement sur une lumière pop avec des tubes majestueux, des bouffées salvatrices d’humour et d’autodérision, avant de retourner, comme par fatalité, à la désolation initiale.
Les perfectionnistes de la technique auront tôt fait de perdre leur temps à parler de lo-fi quand il s’agit simplement de la condition sine qua non à l’expression d’une fragilité magnifique.

Depuis son retour à Paris, Emmanuelle de Héricourt a sorti plusieurs albums (dont un au Japon sur le label Intik), elle a monté le groupe ii avec le guitariste de La Chatte, et a co-écrit, avec Hypo, l’album « The Correct Use Of Pets » qui a remporté le premier prix aux Qwartz Electronic Music Awards de 2007. Elle contribue d’ailleurs au nouvel album de Hypo qui paraîtra en janvier sur le label Tsunami-Addiction (dDamage, Milkymee, La Chatte).
EDH vient également de sortir un EP vinyle 6 titres sur le label Lentonia Records (A&E, Elmapi) qui éditera aussi son prochain album début 2010.

In this exhibition, Melanie Bonajo explores the inhuman characteristics of relationships and prejudices among humans and animals. She investigates the affinity and association between the human and animal worlds - the proximity and expanse between their realms, and potential outcomes of a great imbalance of power.

Deeply concerned with their state, Bonajo takes photographs of depressed animals. She explores the notion that the way we confiscate animals from their local landscapes and move them around – treating them solely as inanimate forms, instead of living beings - is an act of violence.

Through these acts, Bonajo believes captured animals become more human than we typically think. That is, these (manmade) violent processes illustrate the oppression that is innate in humans in order to suppress some sort of Other within them. Bonajo holds that we are we living in the twilight of the mammalian era, with zoos as keepers of relics of the past. We may wonder: will this end include the death of humanity or only a small part of it?

In Bonajo’s forecast, animals will start to re-appear in people's lives as ghosts. Their spirits will be revived at night in dreams. Due to an increased sense of loss, people will sanctify animals in the future like that of pre-modern animistic believers. Through technological means of instant and invisible communication through space and time, humans will try to cross ancient animal territories to heal the past.

For this presentation, Bonajo’s images (all produced without digital manipulation), video and installations depict vignettes of human attempts at animal healing and the merging of man and machine. Captive Lives Western Spectacle warns of a future in which mammals no longer exist and have permanently moved their existence into the sphere of archetypes.

The group show Skyscraper takes its name from a novel written in the same year that the Empire State Building opened its doors. The novel is a romance tinged with feminist ambition and an homage to aspirational architecture – motifs that the artists here display a common regard for. Chicks on Speed, Madelon Vriesendorp and Pelican Avenue all share a fantastical approach to design that leads beyond utility towards the articulation of desire and absurdity. Far from the earnest pronouncements of 1970s feminism, Skyscraper is a joyous declaration of independence from conservatism, logic and category distinction.

Chicks on Speed present two new hats, made in collaboration with designer Christophe Coppens and based on illuminated drawings of Hildegard von Bingen, a 12th-century Christian mystic who received visions, composed ethereal airs, performed healing and even founded convents. These hats transmit the utterances of their wearers by way of microphones and speakers: the contemporary beatified woman can amass her own power tools, it seems.

Madelon Vriesendorp has a foot in both the art and architectural camps, which she bridges with her series of paintings of anthropomorphised buildings lying spent in bed. Vriesendorp’s installations, comprising cardboard constructions and found objects, seem to fuse the rarefied metaphysical potential of Giorgio de Chirico with the unlimited facture of the popular imagination. She has collected postcards and objects over the years that have now amassed into a kind of ‘super-painting’ or ‘Archival Tablescape’, as architect Charles Jenks describes these vistas. It presents a new world in miniature, ordered by way of very personal classification criteria.

pelican avenue was founded by Antwerp-based fashion designer Carolin Lerch. Her clothing, while distinctly wearable, evokes an anachronistic sense of decadence where time, craft and plenitude signal a stand against streamlining. For ‘Skyscraper’ Lerch has made a wall hanging from printed fabric that, while suggesting computer-generated imagery, seems to describe a plan for the fantastical realm of an enchanted forest or a lost city.

CHICKS ON SPEED (Melissa Logan, born USA 1970 lives and works in Hamburg and New York/ Alex Murray-Leslie, born Australia 1970 lives and works in Barcelona/ Anat Ben-David, born Israel 1970 lives and works in London/ Kathi Glas born Germany, 1977 lives and works in Berlin/ A.L. Steiner, born USA 1967 lives and works in New York) have exhibited and performed internationally in institutions including MoMA New York, Centre Pompidou, Paris and Tate Britain, and last year had solo shows at Kate MacGarry and at The Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto. They have frequently collaborated with other artists, fashion designers, musicians and filmmakers such as Jean Charles de Castelbajac, Douglas Gordon, Karl Lagerfeld, Jeremy Scott, Deborah Shamoni and Lisa Walker. Chicks on Speed: It's A Project was published in 2004 by Booth-Clibborn Editions; a second publication is due next year. They are also developing a solo exhibition with Dundee Contemporary Arts for late spring 2010.

MADELON VRIESENDORP (born in Holland, 1945, lives and works in London) co-founded the Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA) in New York in 1970s with her partner Rem Koolhaas. Her paintings have illustrated books and magazine covers - most notably Rem Koolhaas’s 1978 Delirious New York- and she has produced drawings and models in collaboration with architect Charles Jencks, the architectural publications Domus and Abitare and her daughter Charlie. Her work has been shown in New York at The Guggenheim and Max Protetch Gallery, Centre Pompidou in Paris, Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. She had solo exhibitions at the Architectural Association in London in 2008 and the Swiss Architecture Museum, Basel in 2009. Her work is also included in Making Worlds, at the 53rd Venice Biennale until November. The World of Madelon Vriesendorp was published in 2008 by AA, edited by Shumon Basar and Stephan Trüby.

PELICAN AVENUE is a fashion label started in 2004 by Carolin Lerch (born in Austria, 1975 lives and works in Antwerp). Lerch graduated from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp and went on to work with fashion designer Bernhard Willhelm. Her pieces are conceived as both artworks and wearable clothes and are presented within a variety of media such as video, photography, performance and installation, often collaborating with multimedia artist Michiel Helbig. Pelican Avenue regularly exhibits at Paris Fashion Week and Lerch’s work has been shown during the Fashion Biennale 07 in Arnhem, the 7 Fashion Festival 07 and PARK, both in Vienna, at Arteleku in San Sebastian and the W gallery in Antwerp.

Kim-Ann Foxman is probably the most notorious as the faggy vocalist for neo-disco band Hercules & Love Affair. What fewer people know is that she’s also a gifted DJ and jewelry designer. GLU editor Jessica Gysel will kick-off the afternoon talking to Kim-Ann about her inspirations and ambitions, followed by a Youtube selection of her most favourite pieces of music and film. We'll end the afternoon with a mini DJ set -the real works we save for the Flexbar- followed by drinks, mingle and chat.

Joy Ahoulou and Simon Burgunder of Basel, Switzerland have been friends for several years.
They both completed a tailoring apprenticeship and later studied Fashion Design at The University of Applied Arts in Basel.
After receiving two grants for their post graduate collections from the Federal Office of Culture
they decided to work as a team and develop their own line called Ahoulou Burgunder.
Inspired by the notion of manhood, their designs explore the limits of masculinity and feminity - using fabrics from the likes of Schläpfer, Forster Rohner etc. for instance - with derision and fun.

The 16th Hour, "unmastered musical"

Brooklyn based multi-disciplinary artist, Amber Ibarreche recently set up a new music project called The 16th Hour. It dived into my ears like a magical bullet, and it felt necessary to put some lights over it.

Where do you come from?
I'm from Atlantic Beach. A small town in Northern Fl. I moved up to NYC as soon as I dropped out of High School.

You did an exhibition at Capricious Space few months ago: "Ceremonial Entanglements", what was it all about?
Ceremonial Entanglements was a collection of fossilized interpretations of a telegraphers mind. False impressions of Anatomical slang.

You have recently started this music project: The 16th Hour. What's your artistic perspective(s) with it?
The 16th hour is a ruff draft. An unfinished sketch with sound. An unmastered musical.

What are your influences in music?
I'm more inspired than influenced by other music. Bob Dylan, Shannon Funchess of (light Asylum), Bunny, Echo and the bunnymen, shocking blue, Ride, The list is infinite.

Why is Brooklyn so intensively productive right now especially in music, with all these incredible bands making incredible sounds? It seems like you're all connected in some way?
Brooklyn is a magnetic field, A silent film with handmade soundtracks. The evidence is there and everyone takes it upon themselves to turn it into whatever they want it to be. Most everything seems to be done by instinct. We have to be connected. Whether its from afar or a personal encounter. We couldn't exist without each other. There would be know support. Therefore we'd all crumble. I try to stay away from the collective because it excludes.

Who are your artistic buddies?
Most of my artistic buddies are my close friends. Shannon, Bunny, Ry Fyan, etc...

What is happening at the 16th hour?
A lot of laughing is happening in the 16th hour. It's awaiting its final draft.

Although it sounds like a typical pun à la Joe Scanlan, this is not a side event of his exhibition “Red Flags” currently on view at c/c. No, what we’re talking about is the inaugural issue of the new Paris-based art journal called May.

It’s a baptism party with no guest list, no church service and no white cake with white frosting, but season drinks served by the editors and some of the contributors of this first issue, on a sunny Sunday afternoon in Paris. We hope you can join us on this occasion to celebrate this bright initiative, and get a grasp of how this first issue was built piecemeal, and what it could mean as an editorial, or what May stands for and is aiming at.

Leaves of Ash
Inspired by the poet Walt Whitman, Michael Nevin and Julia Dippelhofer set out to gather the work of artists that are contributors to the journal, and their friends and neighbors in Brooklyn. The fragmented natural world, portrayed by the six artists that make up this show, is both a reflection and a fabrication, a witty questioning of their surroundings as well as an observant documentation of them. From Yui Kugimiya’s painting-based animations of cats brushing their teeth and speaking on cell phones to Kon Trubkovich’s existentialist oversized vanity plates that question the nature of identity to Joe Bradley’s symbolist canvases, there is a sense of joy in their observing, absorbing and transforming of the everyday into something transcendental and profound, something that speaks of what it is to live in a specific place, at a peculiar time.

About the journal
Since it’s inception in the winter of 1999 by Michael Nevin, then a student at Montserrat College of Art, the journal has been a vehicle for Michael’s creative surroundings. Taking form as a diary-influenced quarterly magazine, with a focus on contemporary art, the journal has evolved to collaborate with today’s most important established and emerging artists. Publishing exclusive original projects, artworks made specifically for the pages of the magazine, and artist monographs that accompany each entry, the journal has become internationally recognized for its independent and original voice. Now in its 10th year, the journal has collaborated with gallerists and curators such as Anton Kern, Gavin Brown, Clarissa Dalrymple, and Kathy Grayson, and artists such as Dash Snow, Richard Prince, Juergen Teller, Peter Coffin and Jonathan Meese.

The Journal Gallery, established in 2004 in New York’s East Village, with its current location in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, is the sister project of the journal, bringing content from the publications page’s to the walls and floor of the gallery. Artists David Shrigley, Jack Pierson, Gil Pellaton, Dash Snow, Tim Barber, Agathe Snow, Aurel Schmidt, Ken Kagami, Joe Bradley, Jonathan Meese and Miranda July have exhibited work at The Journal Gallery, while musicians such as Thurston Moore and Mark Borthwick, and bands such as Chairlift, The Sads, and TV Baby have given memorable performances there. Both the journal and The Journal Gallery are a collaborative effort by Michael Nevin and Julia Dippelhofer.

Le choix des tissus, la mise en route de la nouvelle collection. L'approche du défilé et l'appréhension qui en découle, les dernières nuits blanches avant le défilé, les changements de dernière minute. Les lendemains du défilé, la réception de la collection dans les médias et ses retombées à l'intérieur de la maison. La réalisation et la chaîne des savoir-faire à travers ses commandes jusqu' à l'essayage final de quelques modèles.
